Myer CEO Richard Umbers will sing Advance Australia Fair at the Melbourne Cup from now on, to avoid any confusion about which company is sponsoring the event.
A spokesperson for the Victorian Racing Club conceded Mr Umbers was not known for his signing voice, but said he was in tune with the sponsorship requirements of the event. “When it comes to singing our anthem, he wears all the right clothes,” he said.
The spokesperson said the anthem was an important song that could not be left to professional singers. “It [the national anthem] really is a chance for us to reflect on what it means to be Australian, and where to buy the latest on-trend fashions”.
The Myer Australian National Anthem™ will be sung directly before the start of next year’s big race.
