The arrival of streaming services like Netflix and Presto has already begun to alter the habits of Australian viewers, with many now taking the time to browse the movies available before firing up their favourite bit-torrent site.
“It has made me think twice,” admitted regular downloader Matthew Francis. “You just wonder – what if I got caught out? What if there was a new TV show that I didn’t know about? So I’ve bitten the bullet and now I go through the Presto, Netflix and Stan catalogues every night before deciding what to rip on Pirate Bay”.
It’s a story being played out all over Australia. Georgia Sloane said she is also worried about the potential consequences of downloading without having full visibility of the shows currently available. “It’s just not worth the risk,” she said.
